A 72-year Ian James Hibbert completed the incredible 10-week trek across 15000 km and 40 mountain passes. To celebrate his 40th-anniversary trip to Nepal, Ian made a bold decision to undertake the challenging Great Himalayan Trails (GHT). Despite having undergone a total knee replacement and reaching such an age, his decision to undertake this remarkable trek stands as a testament to his exceptional achievement.
Ian has dedicated numerous years of his life to engaging in adrenaline-charged climbing and trekking expeditions since the year 1983. Ian underwent an extensive journey of physical rehabilitation and training to regain confidence. He pushed himself by walking 25-30 km daily, simulating the demanding conditions of Nepal in the rugged landscapes of the New Zealand Alps.
In late February 2023, Ian arrived in Kathmandu and planned to trek from Taplejung to Darchula via the upper and lower GHT. He made decisions based on weather forecasts, snow conditions, and his health. Despite the challenging trails, especially the lower route, Ian's knowledge of Nepal and the help of certified guides like Pemba, Pasang, LB, and Buddha were crucial. Carrying essential equipment and keeping his pack weight around 13 kg, including medical supplies and a power pack for his iPhone, Ian successfully navigated the terrain and arranged homestays.
Ian faced immense challenges during the trek, with steep altitude changes of 1,000-1,500 meters and daily journeys of 20-30 km. Despite contracting amoebic dysentery multiple times and encountering unfavorable weather, he remained resilient and adaptable. He embraced the breathtaking landscapes and cultural experiences along the way, from village passes to remote areas like Lukla to Machha Khola and Syabrubesi to Musikot. The journey showcased a diverse tapestry of natural beauty, warm hospitality, and encounters with the vibrant Tibetan culture.
Although Ian couldn't reach Darchula due to unexpected circumstances, the 10-week trek covering 15,000 km left him with lasting memories of vibrant cultures, stunning mountains, and the kindness of the Nepalese people. Despite language barriers, he treasured the inquisitive questions from local children. Ian expresses deep gratitude to the people of Nepal for the unforgettable experiences and the lasting impact they had on his journey.
