Rara Lake Trek is an adventurous trek in the remote North West of Nepal. The region is made up of long ridges covered with temperate forests and alpine pastures enclosing high valleys. Summer rainfall is low but winter snow can be heavy and persistent in this region. The summer season is ideal for trekking in this region, winter is cold but in the autumn season, trekking is rewarded with the perfusion of alpine flowers. This trek is one of the Wilderness treks of Nepal which offer a superb experience of nature. Rara Lake is Nepal’s largest and biggest lake. The trek starts from the mountain airstrip of Jumla after flying from Kathmandu via Nepalgunj.
During this trek, trekkers can experience ancient culture, traditions, wilderness, and flora and fauna. It is a popular trekking destination that offers the feeling of real Nepal with its rural traditions. Tibetan Buddhists make up a small part of the population and make a significant influence on the area through trading. Trekking in this region offers an opportunity to explore the country’s long-preserved secrets. During this trek, trekkers can see the various snow-capped mountains, hidden valleys, medieval villages, spectacular lakes, Buddhist monasteries, Gompas, flora and fauna, and diverse cultures of different ethnic people. Rara Lake trek is a camping base and a special trek permit from the government should be taken before trekking.
There are beautiful forests of Rhododendrons, black juniper, west Himalayan spruce, oak, and Himalayan cypress around Rara Lake where different species of birds, butterflies, and wild animals can be seen. Rara Lake trek starts from Jumla after a short flight from Nepalgunj. From Jumla, the trek reaches Rara Lake after completing the romantic journey to beautiful places such as Chere Chaur, Chala Chaur, Sinja Valley, and Ghoro Singha. After an excursion around Rara Lake, the trek returns to Jumla. Rara Lake is listed in restricted trekking areas of Nepal so, a special trekking permit requires before trekking in this region. As a government-registered trekking agency, we will manage the trek permit for Rara Lake Trek.

Upon your arrival at the Tribhuvan International airport, the representative of Destination Himalaya treks gives you warm welcome in the adventurous Himalayan country Nepal. Then, transfer to the hotel for an overnight stay.
Early in the morning after breakfast, we issue necessary trek permits and arrange and check all the necessary equipment. Once the trek preparation is complete, we proceed to sightsee many historically and culturally important sites which are also listed on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. We visit the holy Hindu Temple of Pashupatinath, the ancient Monkey Temple (Swayambhunath), and another Buddhist shrine of Bouddhanath, one of the largest stupas in the world along with other possible sites. Overnight in Kathmandu.
Enjoy a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj which is of about 1 hour. Nepalgunj is a beautiful town in the Terai region which is also the gateway to Humla. If possible take a flight to Jumla or else spend a day exploring this city. First transfer to the hotel for rest. Later, visit the mini-zoo, local market, and nearby places. Overnight in a hotel.
A scenic flight in the morning to Jumla takes about 20 minutes. Upon reaching Jumla, transfer to the teahouse. Take a proper acclimatization rest before commencing the trek the next day. Later, visit or explore nearby places. Overnight in a teahouse.
The trek starts with a walk on the ascending trail and traversing Khalanga Bazaar. Admiring the picturesque views and passing several villages we arrive at Chere Chaur. Overnight stay.
We follow the western trail and climb uphill slowly and reach Jaljala Pass. Then, walk on a flat trail until Jaljala Chaur. From here, walk on a steep trail and arrive at Chala Chaur. Overnight in a teahouse.
The trail begins with an uphill walk on the trail traversing several villages. Admire the natural beauty of this region and arrive at the historically important Sinja Valley. Take a rest at a teahouse. Explore this lovely valley and interact with the locals and learn in brief the history and importance of this valley. Overnight in a teahouse.
Walk on a steep trail and climb uphill and follow the beautiful trail. After an uphill climb, walk on a flat trail which is very pleasant. Pass Laha village and again an uphill climb on a steep trail to reach Ghoro Singha. Overnight in a teahouse.
After breakfast, the trek begins on a steep trail. After a few hours of ascending, reach Chuchemara Danda and witness the stunning mountain range views. Then, proceed further and walk in the vicinity of Rara National Park and pass through Khatyar Khola and some settlements and arrive at Rara Lake. Overnight in a tent.
Today we spend the day exploring Rara Lake. Rara is the largest lake in Nepal. The lake is also popular as Mahendra Taal. Enjoy boating in the lake and admire the beautiful peaks in the surroundings such as Chuchemara Peak, Ruma Kand Peak, and Malika Kand Peak. After boating, spend some time exploring nearby places. Overnight in a tent.
Walk on a comfortable trail till Gamgadhi. It is the headquarter of the Mugu district which is very beautiful. Enjoy the views and walk on a steep descent trail to Pina. Overnight in a teahouse.
An easy trail walking downhill mostly and passing Ghorchi Lagna and several villages to reach Bumra. Overnight in a teahouse.
Walk on the trail and traverse suspension bridges and descend. Walk for a few hours and reach the hot spring. From there, pass Danphe Lagna and Chere Chaur and arrive at Jumla. Overnight in a teahouse.
We take a short flight to Nepalgunj from Jumla. Then, as the flight schedule we fly to Kathmandu. Until the next flight to Kathmandu, explore nearby places. Fly back to Kathmandu and transfer to the hotel. Take a rest and in the evening join us for a farewell cultural dinner. Overnight in a hotel.

Accommodation and Duration
Accommodations in the Rara Lake Trek is mostly teahouses or guesthouses. The trek duration is of 15 days including arrival in Kathmandu to departure from the International Airport. But, from the starting point to the endpoint, the actual trek duration is 9 days. The teahouses are basic and comfortable with limited facilities. For charging electronic devices, using Wi-Fi, and hot bucket water, pay an additional charge. You stay at tent camp at Rara Lake.
Meals
3-course meals (Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner) are provided during the treks, and only breakfast during your stay in Kathmandu. The staple dish is Nepali Dal Bhat with vegetable curry, pickles, and seasonal salads. Besides dal, bhat & vegetable curry, eggs, soups, noodles, hot tea, coffee, roti (bread), jam, etc. meal options are also there.
Drinking water
Drinking water in the teahouses is easily available. You can fill boiled water at the teahouses or buy mineral water bottles too. If you feel uncomfortable or have some doubts, fill the water in your bottle. And, apply purification treatment using water purification tablets or devices. Don’t forget to bring water purification tablets, and a sustainable water bottle. Having your water bottle helps in minimizing the wastage of plastic water bottles.
Communication
The phone signal is good at most of the parts. The internet connectivity is also good. But, it is hard to get internet connectivity at Rara Lake. You can buy a local sim and use it for calling as well as using the internet using mobile data pack. Overall, telecommunication is stable at most of the parts of Rara Lake.
Starting and Ending points
The starting point of the Rara Lake Trek is from Jumla and ends in Jumla. From Jumla, take a flight to Nepalgunj and from Nepalgunj return to Kathmandu via plane.

Travel Insurance
Travel Insurance is compulsory while traveling. It acts as a safety guard against possible emergencies. Any happenings during the trek are the clients’ sole responsibility. Therefore, have travel insurance that covers all medical emergencies, helicopter rescue, air ambulance, flight cancelations, loss/theft of luggage, personal expenses, cover repatriation, evacuations, and altitude sickness. Do carry a copy of your travel insurance and also send a copy to us for making the necessary arrangements in case of emergencies.
Best time to trek Rara Lake
Spring and Autumn seasons are the best time to trek Rara Lake. The weather is clear and sunny during these seasons. The trail is also comfortable to walk. Rainy and Winter season treks are for experienced trekkers. The trails are muddy, slippery and the weather is unpredictable. Only a few adventurous trekkers dare to trek during these seasons. We recommend you plan carefully if you want to trek during the off-season.
Rara Lake Trek Difficulty
The trail is off-beat and remote. It consists of several ascends, descends, and rough paths, so it is a bit tough to trek. So, it is better to consult the doctor before starting the trek and perform all check-ups and take necessary actions. We suggest you take some physical exercises in different forms like swimming, cycling, running, day hiking, etc. for months before Rara Lake Trek. Although the trek is tough, we assure you that the itinerary is planned with proper rest days which helps to complete the trek smoothly. Thus, trekkers must be physically fit and in good health condition before starting Rara Lake Trek.
Acclimatization and Altitude Sickness at Rara Lake Trek
Acclimatization or rest days are quintessential during trekking. Thus, acclimatization day is properly planned in the itinerary to prevent altitude sickness and adjust to higher altitudes. Rara Lake is our acclimatization spot.
Symptoms of Altitude Sickness
Primary: Headache, nausea, gasping, appetite & sleep loss, dizziness, fatigue, vomiting
Extreme: primary symptoms and hallucinations & unconsciousness
Preventive Guidelines
Luggage limitation for Porter
The luggage limitation depends on the trek duration and maximum altitude gain. Normally, one porter carries the luggage of two trekkers. The luggage limitation per person is a maximum of 15 kg. All arrangements are made considering the health of the porters.
